Introduction
On December 3, 1984, a terrible industrial accident took place in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh.
A poisonous gas called (MIC) methyl isocyanate was leaked in a company called Union Carbide. Deaths: At Least Within the initial days of the incident, 3,787 people lost their lives and about 16,000 people lost their lives in the entire gas scandal. At least 5.21 lakh people were affected by this

At 12:00 in the night, when the entire population of Bhopal was trying to sleep after getting tired of their work.
On the midnight of 3rd December, in the plant number C of a company called Union Carbide, in tank number 610, when water enters the tank, due to which a chemical reaction takes place, the pressure in the tank increases five times during the night, till the midnight of MIC area. Employees begin to feel the effects of MIC gas. A decision to address the leak haa to be made minutes later.
However, by then the chemical reaction in the tank had reached a critical stage. Within an hour, about 30 tonnes of MIC escaped from the tank and went into the atmosphere. Most of the Bhopal residents came to know about the gas leak only after coming in contact with the gas.
What is Methyl isocyanate (MIC) ?
Methyl isocyanate is a colorless liquid that is used to make an insecticide. MIC is safe when maintained properly. The chemical is highly reactive to heat. When exposed to water, the compounds in MIC react with each other causing a heat reaction.
